Yuki-Onna : Various Artists

"Asleep or awake, that was the only time that I saw a being as beautiful as you. Of course, she was not a human being; and I was afraid of her,--very much afraid,--but she was so white!... Indeed, I have never been sure whether it was a dream that I saw, or the Woman of theSnow."...

Kuniyoshi: Nightmares of the Floating World

The Japanese art of Ukiyo-e (Pictures of the Floating World) that originated during the Edo period provide beautiful representation of the landscapes, culture and history of the land of the rising sun. But when the sun sets and darkness falls, the ukiyo-e then turn to the night themes, bizarre erotic couplings and battles with strange beasts and beings come to the fore. Pictured below are a selection of images from the ukiyo-e master of the macabre, Utagawa Kuniyoshi.
